About Theatre

The Volshebnaya Lampa (Magic Lamp) theatre was set up in 1989 by two well-known figures in the puppet theatre world, director, Merited Art Worker Vladimir Shtein (1940-2000) and designer Marina Gribanova.

We are a state theatre with our own stage and own production workshops in the historic center of Moscow. We have a company of fifty-five – actors, producers, designers and specialist technicians. Our productions are based on classics of Russian and world literature for children.
In 1992 together with the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Moscow government we organised the Magic Lamp International Festival of Puppet Theatres. The theatre takes part regularly in Russian and international puppet theatre festivals. We are a member of UNIMA.
We are also active in the international public information and education movement known as "Doing good without frontiers". The Moscow government's charity programme A creative rehabilitation centre for disabled children was held at our initiative and on our premises.
Together with the government of Moscow we are involved in the educational programme called Literature Lessons in the Theatre.
Regular seminars and master classes for people in charge of amateur puppet theatres are held on our premises, as well as the Puppets are your Friends festivals of children's work.
All the items in our repertoire have their own distinctive flavour - original plays, staging, music, animation, puppet construction and production.
